When you see the red light you know you are in the Hi mode so when you go on to hard floors or deep carpets or don't need full Hi Power, push the red switch again and you are back in power saving economy mode.

Thank you for an excellent product What a remarkable and well built cleaner, We should have ditched the Dyson years ago. It's suction power is very good, having to hold down small rugs and carpets.
